About this place
This big square tank, sometimes called the Large Public Bath, lies near the eastern approach to the royal centre and once served the many people who lived and worked around the palaces. Broad flights of stone steps descend on each side to the water, and a channel from the city's extensive aqueduct network kept it filled. Compared with the ornate, tiered Stepped Tank inside the royal centre, this bath is plain and utilitarian — a reminder that Vijayanagara's celebrated water engineering served ordinary daily needs as much as royal display. It is an easy, uncrowded stop on the way between Kamalapura and the citadel.
