About this place

Sugriva's Cave is not a deep cavern but a sheltered chamber formed where massive granite boulders lean together on the riverbank between Kodandarama Temple and the King's Balance. Local Ramayana tradition holds that Sugriva, exiled king of Kishkinda, stored the ornaments Sita dropped when Ravana abducted her, and that Rama and Lakshmana later met him and Hanuman in this stretch of the river. A small pillared shrine has been built into the rock face, and the flat granite outside bears carved footprints and petroglyph figures that pilgrims treat as sacred marks of the epic heroes. The coloured streak on a nearby boulder is known as Sita Konda. The setting is quiet compared with Hampi Bazaar, but the rocky approach can be slippery; wear sturdy footwear and visit in daylight.
