About this place
The Lotus Mahal sits within the Zenana Enclosure, the secluded quarters of the royal women. Its name comes from the lotus-bud shape of its central dome and the petal-like arches of its arcades. A graceful fusion of Hindu temple bases with Islamic-style arches and domes, it was likely a socialising pavilion, kept cool by an ingenious system of water channels in its walls.
Good to know
- Lotus Mahal is inside the ticketed Zenana Enclosure. Keep the ticket for other included ASI sites on the same day; coverage and prices can change.
- Visitors must remain outside the pavilion and behind protective boundaries—do not climb onto the platform or touch the plasterwork.
- The Elephant Stables and Guards' Quarters galleries are a short walk within the same heritage zone.
