About this place
Hemakuta Hill is scattered with dozens of granite shrines, many predating the Vijayanagara Empire and built in a distinctive stepped-pyramid style. Easily reached on foot from the Virupaksha Temple, its gentle slopes and open summit make it the most accessible sunset point in Hampi, with wide views over the bazaar and the surrounding boulder fields.
Good to know
- Granite surfaces become slippery in rain and several edges are unguarded. Use marked paths and supervise children closely.
- Carry water and sun protection; shade and visitor facilities on the hill are limited.
- Leave before the light fades unless you are with a guide and know the descent route.
How to get there

Drive or take an auto to the parking below Hemakuta Hill
Park below and walk up from the Virupaksha gate — ten minutes over stone. The slabs stay warm and slippery-smooth; sandals are the wrong shoes for coming down in the dark after sunset.
