About this place

Anegundi is on the north bank and is older than Hampi. Where the south bank is a site, Anegundi is a village: people live in the houses, the temples are in use, the lanes are swept in the morning and there is no ticket for any of it. Its walls and gateways are Vijayanagara and earlier, and the country around it is the Kishkindha of the Ramayana, which is why Anjanadri, Pampa Sarovar and Rishimukha are all within a few kilometres. Give it a morning on foot rather than an hour by car. Look for the painted house fronts, the old gateways still standing in the lanes, and the craft work — banana-fibre and stone — that the village has built a small living from.

Good to know

  • People live here. Ask before photographing houses, doorways or anybody inside them.
  • Best explored on foot or by cycle. The lanes are narrow and a car is a nuisance to everybody.
  • Working temples: remove footwear where directed, and dress modestly.
  • Reach it by the Anegundi bridge — the coracle crossing from Hampi is not a licensed ferry and has been stopped at times.

How to get there

  • Parking: Anegundi bus stand
  • 470 m walk · about 7 min

Park at the bus stand on the edge of the village and walk in. The lanes are narrow, people live along them, and a car in them is a nuisance to everybody including you.
