About this place

This temple, on the road between Hampi Bazaar and the river, enshrines Veerabhadra, the fierce warrior form created by Shiva's rage. Its most striking feature is a very tall standing image of the god — armed with sword, bow and shield — carved in dark stone, so large that it rises through more than the height of an ordinary sanctum. A small Nandi and a stone Hanuman keep watch nearby, and the pillared hall carries lively reliefs. Still visited by worshippers, the temple is an easy, atmospheric stop for anyone walking the Virupaksha–Kodandarama stretch of the sacred centre.
