About this place

At the eastern end of Hampi Bazaar, a two-storey stone pavilion beside Yeduru Basavanna serves as a compact heritage photo gallery. Its most valuable images were made by British army officer and photographer Alexander Greenlaw in 1856, less than three centuries after Vijayanagara's fall, and are shown alongside later views including the work of John Gollings. The comparisons reveal collapsed towers, altered landscapes and conservation work that are easy to miss when walking through the ruins. The gallery also makes a useful stop before taking the nearby footpath toward Achyutaraya Temple or Matanga Hill.

Good to know

  • The usual visiting sessions are 10:00 AM–1:00 PM and 3:00 PM–6:00 PM; the gallery may be closed during the midday break.
  • Entry is free, but opening depends on local staffing—combine it with Hampi Bazaar rather than making a special trip without checking.
  • The gallery is beside the monolithic Nandi at the eastern end of the bazaar, not beside Virupaksha Temple at the western end.
